Getting Ready for the Future
Students are often more ready for change than adults think they are. When we ask students about what they require for success in college, career, and life, they know the skills they need:
- Critical thinking
- Teamwork know-how and interpersonal awareness
- Problem-solving smarts
- Adaptability
Ohio’s Learning Standards are designed to build these skills–and go well beyond thinking inside the box. What’s more, the standards leave local schools the freedom to determine their own curricula and textbooks, to meet the individual needs unique to each part of Ohio.
And, the process of building student knowledge begins in kindergarten and moves seamlessly across grades, so that there is a logical progression of learning through the elementary, middle, and high school years. This is what students need to spark and sustain their learning.
Grade-by-Grade Guides
Students will be interested in new Parent Guides to Student Success for English Language Arts and mathematics, co-developed by the National and Ohio PTAs with input from The Ohio Standard. Each guide offers an example of the new standards and the knowledge and skills children will gain by grade level, as well as activities families can do to reinforce learning at home.
